Hello everyone,
I’m new to doing repairs, I got ahold of an Xbox series X that is in great condition, and perfectly clean. It randomly shuts down though, staying on and running games for 15 mins to 1.5 hours. I opened it up, saw no apparent damage and replaced the thermal paste but there was no change… added extra fan and still no change. Starting to think it’s a hardware fault… after searching all over the internet and YouTube, I can’t find another that has successfully fixed it in this situation.
Anyone have any recommendations? I was thinking about replacing the power supply but not sure if that would help or not.
15 minutes shut down could be related to Thermals, Power supply, RAM, southbridge or even CPU in that order. No way to test since it only happens after 15 minutes to 1 hour. Hard to tell. Start with the power supply.
Got a known good power supply from another unit and no change. If it were the RAM, any suggestion on how to prove the fault?
@alex In our experience we have solved this issue by ultrasonicing the fan adding a good known thermal paste correctly, possibly new thermal pads making sure everything is very clean. I have also had success baking the motherboard in the oven for 15 mins at 375 and then testing it by putting a game that uses a lot of CPU like say Elden Ring and keep it on while putting a rubber band on the toggle so the character is always moving for say a full night. I feel its directly related with heat cause they system does turn on but you are right it could be a number of issues.
