Hello, I have an iPad Pro 12.9" Model A1584 that will not update.  It was working fine and then it went to update and will not.  I do not care about the data and have factory reset it.  But it still will not update and is unusable.  I took it to Apple and they tried and said I need to buy a new iPad.  I also took it to a UBrakeIFix local shop, and they attempted to update it and said they would not work on it as it is too old.  I like the iPad and have worked to keep it in pristine condition.  No scratches at all.  Do you think it is worth sending to you and cost-effective to attempt a repair or should I look to get a refurbished same model?

What version is the current software and what version are you trying to update to? First gen iPad pros are 7 years old now and iPAD OS 16.1 does most definitely not support them... I'm no iPad dude but need more intel to give you a better response. You best bet is probably to find the latest supported software rev and flash that manually.

Hope this helps,
Dan

According to a Nov 11, 2022 article from the website Digitaltrends, the newest iOS version, 16.1, will still work on the iPad Pro 12.9" Model A1584 from 2015. The lower-end iPads from that year weren't so lucky.

I copied some of the text:

iPadOS 16 compatibility at-a-glance

iPad Pro 12.9-inch: First, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth generation (2015 to 2022).

iPad Pro 11-inch: First, second, third, and fourth generation (2018 to 2022).

iPad Pro: 9.7-inch and 10.5-inch (2016 to 2017).

iPad: Fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and 10th generation (2017 to 2022).

iPad Mini: Fifth and sixth generation (2019 to 2021).

iPad Air: Third, fourth, and fifth generation (2019 to 2022).

I don't know for sure but the author of the article seems to know what is going on.

I don't know how you do your updates but I used to do iPad 2 updates from my computer through iTunes and I would often have issues when trying to get the iOS file directly from Apple's servers in the process of updating. It would take too long and time out.

There is a website where you can download any version of iOS you want. It is better to already have the update file on your computer instead of depending on a download during the update process. Maybe you have had a similar experience.

Good luck,

Luke
