Can someone explain how to detect whether it is a short? capacitor, resistor, mosfet etc? Maybe a good link to articles? Thanks in advance!

google "rossman group manual" and click on the first link. It is a pretty good overview.

By using a digital multimeter is the best way. There are a lot of how to video's showing exactly how to test circuits. Almost every video on the NorthridgeFix YouTube channel shows the process in real time. https://www.youtube.com/c/NorthridgeFix
